Born to parents Dennis C Among and Beverly K Among on September 17, 1960 on the same birthday as Hank Williams and Buddy Holiday. He was named Leslie Allen Among, being brought up in an Asian community and also being of European, Hawaiian decent. Hawaii was a holsome place to grow up being one of the top sport and art scenes in the world. He was given the nick name Taja by family members and co-worker friends for being hiper active in music. His parents taught him music at the age of seven along with his brothers and sisters. He took to music like a fish in water and he and his brothers formed childhood bands with his childhood friend Louis Torres who played bass, the names of the early bands were Morbius, Golden Ace and Steepcliff they performed at various grade and high schools in there district of pearl city. His first performance was in his Catholic church where he attended school named " Our Lady Of Good Council " where he and his brothers Dennis and Ted Among would play guitar for mass and other church events. His parents approved of their musical activities believing that music would keep them out of trouble on the streets, which it did. His Father, Dennis C Among, played guitar for some of Hawaii's greats Alfred Apaka, Kui Lee and his father , Don Ho, Danny Kaleikini, Alan Nalaui, The Surfers, Billy Hulin, Henry Allen and his brothers Alex Among and Frances Among. He also performed at New York's Madison Square Garden twice in the early 70's one of the high mark's of his musical career and life. His mother, Beverly K Among, played piano and vibes in various groups before meeting and marrying his father, Dennis C Among, worked for the City and County of Honolulu as a electrician and his mother worked for the State as an office administrator secretary fourteen year's for some of Hawaii's renown school's like Kipapa elementary in pearl city also Waipahu high school, Pearl City high school and Pearl city and Wahiawa Library both are retired and still are performing in waikiki part time. There are enjoying there children and grand children. They are and alway's will be the musical influence in Taja's life. Other influences include such artist as Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, Grand funk, Motown hit's, The Beatles, Elvis, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck, Pat Traver's, Aerosmith, Paul Roger's, Sammy Hagar, Pink Floyd, Yes, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stone, The Count Basie Orchrestra, Muddy Water, James Brown, The Door's, Karen Carpenter, Judy Garland, Liza, Tony Bennet, Art Pepper, and Frank Strazzeri. He soon decided to write some songs. In 1972 Les Among ( Taja ) and bassist, Louis Torres, went into Jensen Studios to record some songs. After releasing these songs on the KTUH and 98rock FM local radio shows, one of the songs received a lot of air play. That song was 'somewhere to go' which would be released later with other local bands on the 98 Rock to Riches album under the band name Steepcliff. This was the beginning of many offers to come to perform at many night clubs in Honolulu. The clubs at which Taja performed in Waikiki during the 70's at The Dragon Lady that later became The Wave Waikiki. Others were Gussies Lamors, show room concert club, and later they would record at Sea West recording studios who recorded such acts as Heart, Marvin Gaye, Crosby Stills and Nash, they also performed at the infamous Jazz Cellar that later changed there name to the The Rock Cellar and again to The Cellar. These venues became a stomping grounds for Taja to try out new songs with tourist from all over the world. In 1976 Taja performed at the Diamond head crater festival in front of thousands of people this out door concert was recorded some of which will be released later this year. During the 80's and 90's with the release of three album CD's first called 'Over the Edge' second titled 'Coming Back' and third called 'Under The Sun' at this time Taja warmed up for many headliner rock acts including 'Jefferson Starship'. 'Dangerous Toys' and 'Twisted Sister', Taja all along showing the raw energy and progressive rock, jazz and blues in his music with a reputation of playing great high energy shows all over the State of Hawaii also touring the west coast with shows in Seattle Washington , California West Hollywood, Orange county and Las vegas Nevada. Now back at home in Hawaii there is a reality TV show produced by Taja about the music scene and the culture spiritualness of of living and performing in paradise along with featured artist and with a monthly concert show calender guide. The TV show is called 'Rockin in Paradise' to be featured on KITV 4 ABC Hawaii network this coming year. Along with the new CD title release ( V ) also a new song release to be up loaded on the web site called 'Lucky Lady'. This song has a 70's sounding rockin horse feel thats clearly missing in todays music. Taja is now performing in Waikiki at Kelly o'Neils and on featured dates at Pipeline concert cafe. Check for times and dates on scheduled events page, in 2006 Taja performed at Hawaiis State Capitol. There in the House Of Representatives he sang a song for Hawaiis Homeless familys to promote homeless awareness in our state and what we can all do to help these familys get back on there feet so they can find work and housing. All this prompt Taja and our Hawaii based nite clubs to a series of of fund raising concerts to donate to social service groups and faith based organizations to assist in providing for familys in need.
